DIFFICULTY READING DUE TO PRESBYOPIA

Difficulty Reading Caused by Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a condition associated with the aging of the eye that results in the progressively worsening ability to focus clearly on close objects.

You may become aware of presbyopia when you start holding books and newspapers at arm's length while reading.

How does the Presbyopia Occur?

As your eye’s lens can become less flexible, this makes it more difficult to change shape while focusing on close-up images. As a result, these images appear out of focus.

Causes of Presbyopia

It is due to hardening of the lens in the eye causing the eye to focus light behind rather than on the retina when looking at close objects.

Symptoms of Presbyopia

Patients with Presbyopia may notice:
  • The need to hold reading material at arm's length.
  • Blurred vision at a normal reading distance
  • Headaches or fatigue from doing close work

How is Presbyopia Treated?

Treatment options include
  • wearing corrective eyeglasses (spectacle lenses) or contact lenses,
  • undergoing refractive surgery, or
  • getting lens implants for presbyopia.
It can cause eye strain and discomfort if left untreated.

Diagnosis for Presbyopia

Presbyopia can be diagnosed by your ophthalmologist or optometrist during a regular Eye Health Examination.

During a regular Eye Health examination, the doctor will
  • Review your eye’s anatomy,
  • Functionally assess your vision, and
  • Look for any signs of presbyopia

Treatments for Presbyopia

Depending on the nature of your condition, Presbyopia may be treated by the following:
  • Eyeglasses
  • Contact lenses
  • Refractive surgery
  • Lens implants
  • Lifestyle and home remedies
