PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY (PDT)

What is Photodynamic Therapy?

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a treatment in which a special light-activated medicine is used to seal abnormal blood vessels in the eye.

What is the Benefit of Photodynamic Therapy?

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) can be used to selectively target the abnormal tissue with minimal effect on the surrounding intricate structures within the eye.

Which Eye Conditions may be Treated with Photodynamic Therapy?

Eye conditions that may be treated with Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) include:

How is Photodynamic Therapy Performed?

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) can be done in the office setting.

It involves the following steps:
  • Light-sensitive medicine is injected into a vein in your arm
  • Eye drops are administered,
  • A special contact lens is placed on your eye
  • The medicine collects in the areas with abnormal blood vessels within the eye.
  • A cold laser directed for 90 seconds at the area of concern in the eye
  • The laser activates the medicine and closes the leaking or abnormal blood vessels.
This procedure may need to be repeated 3 or more months later.

How do You Prepare for Photodynamic Therapy?

You should arrange for transportation back home after the procedure as your eyes will be temporarily sensitive to light and you will not be able to drive.

You should also bring sunglasses, long-sleeved clothes and a wide-brimmed hat. You should avoid sunlight for a few days because the medicine you received via injection makes your skin sensitive to sunlight temporarily.

What Precautions Should be Taken After Photodynamic Therapy?

Specific instructions will be provided by your ophthalmologist.

Care should be taken to avoid direct sun exposure for a few days after the procedure.

What are the Side Effects Associated with Photodynamic Therapy?

You may experience temporary blurriness and change in vision immediately after the Photodynamic Therapy (PDT); however, these side effects should resolve over a few days. If blurry vision persists, please contact us.
